Extended Practice- Study Task 2 - Portfolio Building- Loopdeloop pt2

Portfolio Building- Loopdeloop pt.2

To start this animation I;
  • Started building an armature
  • Then added plasticine
  • Then did features
  • Sculpted eye lids
  • Made the prop
  • Started to animate
Here are the stages with images showing just what I did and how the character came together.
This is the finished animation, on a loop with sound.

Overall I really think I did well to finish this animation in the time as I missed the first 2 weeks due to illness, so I was able to catch up within a week and produce a funny loop that I was able to submit to Loopdeloop.

For the animation short, I only had about a week on my feet to complete it, this meant very little time for building and filming. After doing this though, a short animation if fine for plasticine but anything longer and the hands squish completely out of place. This is why, if I were to carry on using plasticine for quick builds, I will use liquid latex on the hands. As the brief was 'love is love' it was fun doing something more comedic rather than "lovey dovey". I haven't had the chance to do many so this was a good change. Another thing I will be challenging myself to do, would be lip syncing as this is what I still haven't had a chance to do so the learning potential would be incredibly effective.

Yet I am happy with the use of eye lids as this was also new territory so I can say this was really good to understand and use for the future. As this was only the beginning of the year, this was a good small animation to start off with, but still let me learn and get back into the swing of things. Now for the other animations, I will try and use other mediums and very different briefs.

Extended Practice- Study Task 3 - Projection Mapping Christmas Brief

Study Task 3 -

Projection Mapping Christmas Brief

For this brief we have been given the task of doing:

  • 20 Second Animation Loop
  • Split into Teams
  • 2-3 Seconds Each
  • Plan what will show up on the bricks
Here is the template given
As I was still ill when this brief was given it took a while to understand what they were asking but with the help of my partner Emma, we decided we could work together to create this project.

Extended Practice- Study Task 2 - Portfolio Building- Loopdeloop pt1

Portfolio Building- Loopdeloop

Started with Loopdeloop- Love is Love

Doing:
  • An animation with food as the love
  • Animation plan
  • Character design
  • Food design
  • Storyboarding
This is the board I have created of what I have been looking into and what I am wanting him to maybe look like.

I knew for this project I wanted to do a male character who was a bit of a hipster, with a moustache and interesting features. So I started designing loads of character heads to try and see which stood out.

The animation is about someone loving food so I also started sketching all of the most popular foods I could think of with these as the result. I want this to be in stop-motion so I had to be wary on what would work and what wouldn't.
food

This is the page of quick planning where I could get all of the ideas out, as well as how it is going to be done/ executed. This includes the character being just a torso upward, as the base isn't needed for the shots.

Here are the storyboards for the animation and what is going on. I will be simplifying these as I am under strict time constraints, and want to make sure that I dont make it too complicated.

Extended Practice- Study Task 6 - Critical Evaluation

Study Task 6 - Critical Evaluation

Near end of the module:
  • Produce a 750 word critical evaluation
  • include reflection on the entire development cycle of the module
  • critically articulating what have been key developments in your projects
  • where you feel links between theory and practice can be identified
  • planning
  • organisation
  • group or collaborative engagement
  • also consider reflection of any audience testing and how it informed your decision making processes, how you would market this project.
This should be presented in .doc or .docx format

Extended Practice- Study Task 4 - Visual Journal

Study Task 4 - Visual Journal

Once in the 'Pitching' phase of this module, clear ideas of what you want to develop further for your Extended Brief will be apparent.

For this, significant research will have to show critical investigation- (Idea from your statement of intent)

Should include:
  • Visual Testing
  • Further development of storyboards
  • scripts
  • concept art
  • character designs
  • background artwork
Team:
  • Individual Contributions
The Art Book

Make a selection from your visual material created for your Extended Brief

Create an Art Book around that (pdf format / A4 Portrait / 300dpi /minimum of 20 pages (Including cover and back).

The Artbook will be put together in Adobe InDesign so plan time for this!
Plan for Digital Print dept to organise printing and binding.
Due to the double sided printed process- page number need to be a multiple of 4 - ie. 20 / 24 / 28 / 32

Art Book is your Production Bible for the Realisation Phase
It should include:
  • Branding - Title Design
  • Concept Art & Thumbnails
  • Final Character Designs - Turnarounds / Action Poses / Expressions

Extended Practice- Study Task 5 - Production Blog

Study Task 5 - Production Blog

The blog this year is to selectively document & reflect on Portfolio Building and Projection mapping tasks.

The MAXIMUM word count for the Blog is 2000 words -be concise and clear - utilise bullet points to highlight moments

4 x Blog Posts for the PROJECTION MAPPING BRIEF ( Study Task 3 )
  • Collaboration
  • Solutions
  • Testing we went through
  • Reflection on working for a client
  • Any other experiences that went through for making project work.

2x  Blogs Posts for each PORTFOLIO BUILDING TASK ( Study Task 2 )
  • Total of 6 posts
  • Evaluation & reflection on approach to brief
  • Relevance to how you are developing as an animator
  • Bullet point break downs of how you developed your idea.
  • Use images or test videos/animatics

Extended Practice- Study Task 2 - Portfolio Building

Study Task 2 - Portfolio Building

This year this brief helps to further our portfolios with competitions and live briefs. We will be doing 3, with an extra christmas brief.

Competitions can be Loop de Loop / 11 Sec Club / Do it in 20, or a self identified live brief ( negotiated with tutor ) YCN or D&AD Briefs

Here are the dates needed for the briefs:

  • Starting 5th Oct (Complete animation by 26th Oct for Screening-short turn round- keep it simple)
  • Starting 14th Dec (Complete a set animation by 18th Jan - for screening at 2pm-Any Comp not previously done)
  • Starting 18th Jan (Submit to competition by 22nd March-Choose YCN or D&AD Briefs - working individual / or as a team) (up to 3)
Does not have to be an animation, art boards, sets or characters too.

Consider carefully the scale and scope of these briefs- short where needed. It could be concept art, character design or a short animation in response to a set/live/competition brief.

For showreels and portfolios work.

Work to your strengths, work to your areas of specialist practice

You must be able to demonstrate they have been submitted to a project!

Deliverables will be determined by your individual submissions.

Typically animation or film will be presented at 1920x1080 H264 codec .mp4.
Portfolio work should be developed on Artboards that are A3 at 300DPI and presented as .PDF.

Extended Practice- Study task 1- Extended Brief

Study task 1- Extended Brief

Identify and develop a substantial project & end animation.
You should aim to be making broadcast / festival quality work, not more testing
The module presents you with an opportunity to collaborate and work on a group project.
This project will let you realise the difficulties and strengths within the field you want to go into will have, and how to overcome them.
You are required to develop a case first
For this we need to do:
  • 500 word Statement of Intent - which you will present on the 26th Oct
  • It must include an overview of why you are interested in undertaking this particular type of subject?
  • How it will develop and challenge you as a practitioner?
  • Highlight how your COP3 project might be having influence.
  • It should also include an overview of the content you will produce
  • its appropriateness to the industry or post graduate education.
The Statement of Intent should include a summery of the "story" you will produce.
All year long!
Milestones to be aware of:
  • 14th Dec - Initial Concept Art / Establish Aesthetic
  • 18th Jan - Storyboarding Complete
  • 8th Mar - Animatic / Layout or Blocked Animation Complete
  • 3rd May - Final Crit - Presentation with completed Soundtrack

Completion of your Extended Brief project on 10th May in a state ready for submission to a film festival or competition

(Project submitted as -1920x1080 H264 (.mp4 ) at 20mbs data rate)
