Character&Narrative-Study Task 2- Research 5- Stop Motion Technique within Flim

Research 5- Stop-Motion Technique within Film Potential&Limitations

Stop-Motion first came about with the famous Ray Harryhausen who thought to pair the models he builds with live action movies. This had never been done before so created a lot of interest within the industry. This is when people realised animated characters could come to life to create stop-motion. Here are some of his famous characters.

Decades later stop-motion is its own medium of animation within the industry. Sadly his way of using toy sculptures isn't used with live action anymore as the standards of film have become higher than ever. They are used to create fully sculpted movies, like Shaun the Sheep and Wallace and Gromit.

Scale has vastly changed over the years, growing rapidly. Here you can see just how big the scenes were for the Shaun the Sheep movie as well as the Boxtrolls streets.

Scale can create limitations as well as potential. The potential is that you can create much more detail within the set as well and the characters if the size is increased. Although a limitation would be costing. The larger you go the more materials, animators, designers and building space will be needed.

Here is the small set I have created, You can really see what the limitations would be from a set this small. If I were to create something to be industry standard. I think I would go bigger with more time spent on getting the characters as detailed as possible, but this whole project has let me understand how everything needed to build and set up takes a lot of time and concentration with delicacy. I will keep this in mind if I attempt this in the 3rd year.
