Responsive- Final Evaluation

Final Evaluation

When starting this module, I could only do basic animations from within Photoshop and I hadn't been able to experiment with mediums as much. By the end, I know about how to have a moving camera within the animation, how to upload and use different tools that I didn't even know were on Photoshop, as follow doing frame by frame animations a lot more smoothly. This would have taken me years to figure out, but becuase we had a chance to do many briefs instead of one big one, we were free to experiment and look at which areas we find enjoyable and find more beneficial to our future. Now we are finished with Responsive as a module, it becomes a lot clearer what I have improved on and which animations/ briefs I naturally found more beneficial to complete. This included Character Design Reference as it opens you up to design a new person who can fit the theme, but they have no rules agains species, age, setting or story, so this means it gives a lot more freedom than most competitions. This is why I chose to carry on producing characters every month, and I shall carry on doing so for the forcible future.

Apart from gaining software skills, I learnt a lot about communication, teamwork, organisation and professional layout skills.
Communication has always been a difficult thing for me to accomplish, so learning more about how to work with people I dont know is very useful to me, most of this learning was on Collaborative practice as it meant going into a room full of 2 other courses and finding people who would work with you. Time management is something that gets difficult doing work on your own, this is why Collaborative Practice meant overcoming this issue as you are working with other people so getting behind made things more stressful, this is why I worked hard to keep on time and as soon as a member of my team had finished something, I would add it to the designs straight away. This was also an importance that I learned for individual practice also, becuase each brief had a deadline, accepting too many made it difficult to complete projects, this is something tat happened more at the beginning as I got used to how I worked.

When looking at everything I produced, the Mouri Warrior was one of the things that I most enjoyed and looked best as an outcome, I felt differently to the other character designs as they didn't come out looking like good, well thought out characters, I think for my piece to go well, I have to take time and many more sketches to produce something great, but this was all a learning curve to get used to what I can and cannot do, or which goes better for me in the overall outcome. From Loopdeloop, Chicken was the best thing I produced as he shows an original looking character, a forward walk cycle, as well as bold colours and movements. I spent ages on this designs and animations as I was busy with other animations at the time but when I got going, I was proud of how he turned out.

When looking at all of my animations and character designs together, I can see a definite style and aesthetic of bold colours, dark lines and small amounts of shading. This is something I want to come away from as I dont want everything to look the same, I want to experiment with styles, brushes and overall colour pallets as this will help show I can be versatile, which cannot be seen through aesthetics within this module, but I didn't see it till the end when they were all together. This is something I am aiming to change within 3rd year. This all comes down to testing and development, when I designed something good I shouldn't have changed mediums into digital so it fitted, this is how they all ended up looking similar. I wish i had taken the time to produce a watercolour animation as this would have looked delicate and beautifully coloured, wheres digital can look blocky and flat colours, something i struggle with coming away from. This is how I wish I could have changed throughout the module, by going out of my comfort zones and producing something different, even if it didn't work, just experimenting would have been beneficial to me as a student.

Organization is a big thing I would change. Sticking to a ghantt chart, I would have a direction to follow and understand where I needed to be by that date, this is something I didn't think of doing for the briefs and struggled to produce the work on time, even thought I always made sure they were done, it would involve a lot less stress if I had tapered the workload, not doing the bulk right before the brief deadlines. I also found my software to be something that hindered me, I can only afford Photoshop for my laptop, this means I only have it to use. This means I need to do anamatic, animation, and editing, all in the same place so the look will never be as good if it cant be brought through to After Effects, this is something I will change in the 3rd year as I am hoping to spend more time in the studio as I wast able to as much this year.

When thinking of the future, I have been able to find many things I can improve on even now. This means that when faced with doing this in the 3rd year, I can make these alterations and hopefully produce a better animation that looks more professional and well thought out. Working within a team also has its ups and downs but when someone can split workloads with me, it really takes off some pressure that I would have been under on my own. This is defiantly something I am having to consider when facing the final year, so I will face it with these altercations that will develop my work further. Although some character, unfinished ideas and aesthetics are some things I can take with me but also take further, as theres no point wasting a good idea, I feel I can stretch these out and produce more work that I can manage, knowing I have done pre-production work to get the kinks out of the ideas and designs. This is another thing I have realised when doing work within the 1st and 2nd year, when you get better as an artist, looking back makes older work less impressive to yourself. This isn't a negative though as it means you have come further. This is what I aim to do when I leave, keep getting better and better to my work can develop as well as my skills.

Overall looking at this module, it has been incredibly useful for me as an artist, as I can produce a lot of quick work and small animations to further myself and find more things to be proud of if I have more work to see from myself as I can become more aquatinted with my strengths and weaknesses so when working with others, I can have partners that replace my weaknesses with their skill, this is what makes great projects, when everyone can bring something to the table.

Responsive- Character Design Reference- Game of Thrones

Character Design Reference-

Game of Thrones- Original Idea

The original idea for this months character was Brienne of Tarth as she is a strong woman as you can see from the mood board I made to get a good look at her outfit, features and her personality.
This is just a small sketch I started with, I wanted to see what I could do with the hair as I tend to struggle with short hair on women as they never look right. I am happy with how this turned out though as it could look like her with more detail and colour added.
To start with I sketched a full size version of her drawing her sword. I like the sketch of her body at this point but her face is wrong. Yet I cant see what's needing to be fixed. I am going to leave this design for a while and see if it looks better or worse over time.
After a few days I came back and inked the design, this is when I knew the face was really what ruined the design. It doesn't look enough like a powerful character for anyone to know who she was even if I did enter this character into the competition. This is when I decided to change the character to my other favorite powerful woman from the series
Margaery Tyrell is the other character I was toying with drawing from the start, I haven't really drawn any women in dressed for a while so I have missed doing this so I am exited to draw a  female character. I wanted to make her more cartoon like so this will be an interesting task to do.

I have chosen to do her in watercolours as I wanted to see the effect I could gain from this on her dress as I have been a fan of watercolour over the past few weeks instead of digital. I am happy with how she turned out, apart from the face again, I have been stuck with faces recently so this obviously wasn't my day to get it right. I am ok with her not being the best as it taught me that the face is something I do actually need to study to get a style that I can stick with for a while.

I do like the watercolour though, as it is delicate and full of motion in the dress, yet shiny in the sigil behind her. Which is the element I like most about this piece, along with the skirt. I have also been able to add subtle highlights to the skin that I normally struggle to do with watercolour so I have been able to gain and show some more skills in this piece that I am happy with.

This is the last character I will be doing for Character Design Challenge before the deadline of responsive but it has really let me develop myself and I will be carrying on over the holiday to carry on producing and submitting for this site.

Responsive- Studio Brief 3 - Project Report Details

Studio Brief 3 - Project Report Details

Details I need to cover when writing the report. All of these points will further peoples understanding of the work I have produced and why I have produced it.

  • selection, production and evaluation of work in response to Studio Brief 1 and Studio Brief 2 of this module

  • effectively communicate the briefs that you have undertaken, why you chose each brief and an evaluation of the success/problems with your response.

  • It is essential that you attempt to summarise what you have learnt from working on each brief as well as how this will impact on your practice as a whole

  • The report will need show what you have done and why.

  • What experience, views and opinions are essential for people to understand your work and how do you present them?

Responsive- Character Design Reference- Carnival of Venice

Character Design Reference-

Carnival of Venice

This month in the Character Design Challenge the theme is Carnival of Venice. This is to do with the carnival celebration that Venice holds each year. This is the mood board to show what my thought processes would be for this month. With the big dresses, eccentric masks and vintage overall look make this theme endearing for me. Yet coming up with ideas, has been harder for me than I thought.
These are some sketches I have done for this theme. I couldn't decide whether I wanted to do an extravagant woman or a dark witchdoctor assassin, this is why I have not produced a final piece for this month. That an with other work deadlines coming up, it has been difficult to juggle the different tasks and modules at the same time.
This is a further page of ideas. I really liked the image I had for the Witchdoctor as the overall piece would be moody and mysterious so this would be the design I would have chosen if I had the time to complete a character. Although I hope to do the next months theme instead as they really are useful in furthering my skills in character designs.

Responsive Collaborative- Submitting

Responsive Collaborative-

Submitting

When submitting to YCN for this brief, we were all there to help submit our work. For submission, we needed a proposal, a short paragraph about why were were doing what we were doing and why we chose the BEAR brief.
This is the proposal we attached with our work:

OUR BEAR PROPOSAL

For BEAR, we wanted to do something a bit different. Fear is something you often try to avoid talking about with children, but it is such a fundamental part of life and development. We wanted to create a set of cards, showing how fear doesn’t have to be too scary. I think children will also find comfort in knowing that they’re not alone in their fear. Fun facts and jokes to make the fears not seem so scary anymore, making children more confident and able to overcome things.
Kids will be able to collect stickers to add to their BEAR poster, giving BEAR his ‘armour’ and able to join him fight against fears. We want kids to know that it’s okay to have fears, and give them confidence that they can overcome it.

AMY, BETH, LIZZY

When going online to submit, we followed the instructions they provided. They told us we needed to sign up/login, ZIP all of the files and say a brief statement of why we have chosen this brief.
Here one of the girls in the team chose to sign up in her name. After it asks for any other members so all of our names are still mentioned in the long run. This was a simple step so didn't take long to do at all, which I was worried about as the other site D&AD crashed when people tried to upload so we were glad this didn't happen.

Here is a message that popped up as we pressed enter with all of our files attached. After submitting, they have said we will recieve a confirmation email telling us whether or not it went ok, but also just letting us have an email of confirmation.

Here is the email we received. They have given confirmation on our submission and that it arrived and was a correct submission.
I am very happy this project is over now as it was extremely stressful and complicated working with head strong people. It was however, very interesting to take part in as I have learned new skills, new amounts of patience and a new understanding of  Illustration. If I were to do another project however, I wouldn't let my designs be overlooked like they kept being this time, I wont just back down becuase they feel their ideas are better. So this is something I hope to do in the 3rd year to have more of an authority within a team, like a team leader.

Responsive- Loopdeloop Chicken Animation

Responsive-

Loopdeloop Chicken Animation

When sketching and getting my animation together, I needed to distinguish the colour of the feet so it was easier to understand, so I coloured one leg red, so I could be sure which foot had been in front of the last. At this point, I was still trying to do more work on in-betweens so my chickens body flowed more smoothly.
As I was adding in details, I added in the facial features and smoothed out the lines so they weren't basic sketches. This helped me to see any mistakes or lines that didn't work.
When adding colour, I started with the feet so I could see the colour on them to try and work out if the legs are working in a walking motion.
This is the fully coloured chicken. He looks a lot better in colour as I can see him more clearly and understand his motions better, but he looks how I envisioned him to look for the start so I am happy with the outcome.

This is a clip of the rough animation currently, but I am not happy with the background as it doesnt look like he is moving properly. As I am running out of time, a basic background is what I will need to do but if I had a lot of time, I would do a rounded base coming away from the screen to add depth and make it look like the chicken is constantly walking towards the screen and over a hill.
Here was another idea a peer gave me, as I was designing a sassy walk, he could be coming down a catwalk for chickens and add more of a comedy element to the animation. This would take too long as I would have to work out how to loop the animation but I will have to leave this idea and maybe come back to it in the future.

This is the final animation of a looping walk cycle of my chicken, the background is basic and it concentrates more on his walking and shows a lot of motion from the body. I am happy with how he turned out as I didn't have a lot of time, becuase of other projects, to complete him. Yet I am incredibly happy I did finish it.

This is the box to submit the animation on Loopdeloop. As I have submitted this year already, I knew what I needed to do so this didn't take to long to do. As it is a gif, I needed to put it on Tumblr first as they need to know it isn't too big, but this was easy and also didn't take much time.
This is just a screenshot from completion saying thank you for submitting.

Responsive Collaboration- Layout Progression- Completing

Layout Progression- Completing

This is the final design of the packet, poster and banner. These are all for gaining interest of children by bringing in digital elements as this is what that generation is used to. This poster will keep their attention. I have written on the poster 'Im here to protect you from your fears! Collect cards to find my armour, as I appear to have lost it in my travels!'  This lets children know they dont have to be afraid, as well as that BEAR is here to help. While also adding in the collective stickers for them to collect.
Below are all of the final cards for this project that we are going to hand in in a few days. I am very proud of how they turned out. I have learned a lot being in this collective, the struggles, the stress and what I am capable of doing under pressure. If we were to win, we have many more ideas for these cards as their are so many different fears that children posses.

Responsive Collaboration- Final Designs and Pages

Final Designs and Pages

When the team member who did the characters gave me the designs, she hadn't done the backgrounds yet. This was when I tested the character on the cards, as I was seeing if she even needed to do them. Although after looking at the characters, they dont look right without their background behind them as they look too empty and out of place. I sent these to the girls and they agreed that they didn't quite look right.
These are what the cards look like at this point.
As we wanted to go further with making our cards collectable. I decided to do a poster. This poster will be letting children collect stickers with each card, where they can scan a barcode and go to the poster online with new stickers each time to add. Here I have drawn the packet of one of BEARs products. This is the back of the packet. I have added their original symbol as this would be their outside packet, that we will not change.

Apart from at the lower half of the back. I have added the BEAR of our design in his helmet, as well as a barcode. One, a child could scan with their parents and go to the poster to place his armour on and find more armour, from other cards.
I am adding smaller elements from the cards as to keep the overall theme going, and fill out the poster so it doesn't look blank, boring and plain. I wanted to keep it fun for the children who would be wanting the poster.
On the back of the cards will be the title in large letters. This is so children can understand what the cards are about and wont be confused about the information they are receiving.

I have also added in a gold metal pole for the banner on the upper right. This will have information on where to find the poster. It will also have individual colours for each card.
These are the banners for the website that follows the barcode to the same location. Each one is a different colour, that are bright and colourful. This also furthers their individuality and makes them more collectable.
Here are 4 examples of the colours I have chosen, while making them more pastel tones as the other ones before I tried, were too harsh with the theme we have.
When making the cards and getting to the final designs, I wanted to check the sizes as the cards are smaller than I thought when I was researching. This is the size of the cards on an A4 paper. I used this when building the cards, as it helped me to figure out the size of images, text and elements on the packet.

Responsive Collaboration- Layout Progression- Adding More Detail

Layout Progression- Adding More Detail

This week was spent laying out more of the detail from within the cards, like text, BEAR and smaller elements. This image below, is where I left off. As you can see, there are still many things to add and design so I will be working hard to get much more of the cards base down for the template.
As one of the other girls in our team is doing the characters and backgrounds, they needed the size of the box, they needed to fill. This was the basic shape they would need to have filled so I sent them the approximate size. This means they are producing the work needed for us to complete this project in time so I hope they can have them done quick as it is very stressful working in a team you cant talk to and might not get along with if work doesn't go well.
This is the character with their background on the canvas background. I am having to make it smaller and change my background as it goes over the edges, but it also covers the nails, so I will swap these over so the nails are on top. This way it will really look like the image was placed on top and pinned on a board.
This is the text one of the girls within the team created, they didn't like the text I produced so decided to do it and I add it in. This wasn't that much of a surprise as Typography has never been one of my strong points. As long as the cards look as good as we can make them, it will be a good result. This box is to show the real name of the phobia. As the cards are for 4-9 year olds, saying the words seemed like it would be very useful, below the word you can read the pronunciation of how they can say each section of the word. This also aids the educational element of the cards.
This is BEAR. The main character for the cards. We have done more than most have done for the cards in the past as they said BEAR needs to be the main character, so we have added him to the front and the back. This shows we understand the brief BEAR has given us. I have placed the character so it looks like he is talking and speaking the interesting facts the the children. This also makes the character more fun for the children when receiving facts and information as they normally think of this as boring, as it is learning.

This is on the back of the card. The facts are in the bottom box, being spoken by BEAR and the armour box above is showing jokes to make the audience laugh. One of the girls within the team looked up the facts, whereas I researched the jokes. There will be one joke per card and 2 facts.

These are all of the jokes I found about each of the topics and fears we have found.
This is a closeup of the quill and ink pot. These are a small element on the card to further the theme we created. It took me a while to do the quill as I couldn't get the look right but I am very happy and proud of how it turned out.

Numbering the cards was made very clear to BEAR as being important as it makes the cards collectable. Here I have added a number to the scroll but after looking at it from a distance, it looked too bold and I wanted it to seem like it had been written on the scroll not placed on. This is why I redid the writing in a paler colour to blend in more.
This is the text that looks better than the one I did above as it looks like it belongs on the card instead of added on after.
